It is not required, but can be beneficial if you are in an area which incurs frequent power outages. The battery back-up must produce a pure sine wave voltage output. Examples of such models include the APC (American Power Conversion Corporation) Smart UPS 750VA and above, Cyberpower PR1500, and MGE Pulsar EX700RT.
